Youth Leadership Program

The Leadership Program serves Lower School and High School students who are motivated toward leadership independent living skills and self-direction in their lives, to successfully transition from school to community.  Eligibility is determined by academic achievement, school attendance, positive attitude and a students' willingness and ability to participate in all phases of the program.  Applicants are required to submit a 2 to 3 page typed essay entitled, "Leadership and the Student".  The essays are reviewed by the Dean of Students in conjunction with the school Guidance Counselor and one or more members of the administrative team.  Selection of program participants are then notified and invited to attend their first meeting.  Developing the leadership skills of young people with disabilities help them learn to confront the barriers to employment and social participation they may face as they mature to adulthood.

Another vital aspect of the leadership program is the diverse activities that are taught in large and small groups.  Our outdoor program is complemented by a number of engaging group discussions, journaling, small group projects and student-led activities.  The curriculum includes, but is not limited to a selection of activities:   Wilderness living skills, Wilderness first aid, orientation and map reading, tents and shelters, fire building and outdoor cooking.
